Pivoting again!

We are very excited to have our Wizards all together starting on Monday!  In many ways, it will feel like the first week of school all over again as we make connections between the two groups.  Since we are now joining our two groups together, we have altered our class lists.  The kids are aware that we will be mixing everything up come Monday. :)  They will also be switching classrooms for LA and Math so that they get a change of scenery.  Not to worry, we are cleaning the desks and chairs between transitions from room to room and have trained the kids this week as to the "flow" so that these transitions can happen safely.

Here are the new core pod lists if you're wondering...

Also, here is the new schedule for the 4-1 model. Please note that we begin teaching at 7:50 so it's helpful if kids arrive between 7:30 and 7:40 so that they have time to get settled in and eat breakfast.

Dress

Please continue to encourage you students to dress according the weather so that they are prepared to be outside for activities and mask breaks.

Open House

Teachers will be creating short videos to send you since we will not be having an in-person open house this year.  We want to make sure we take that time to answer your questions.  If you have not done so yet, please fill out this BRIEF survey so we can do our best to answer your questions in the video we will be sending out or email us with your questions!

Picture Day

Paperwork for our upcoming picture day went home last week.  You can either submit the paperwork or order online.  Picture day is happening this Tuesday, Oct. 27th

Math

In math we have moved from finding volume of rectangular prisms composed of cubes to applying this thnking to the volume of boxes that students used to measure and find the volume.  Next, we will be moving on to multi-digit multiplication and division.

Each week students are completing review or learning new multiplication/division facts.  We practice using strategies for soliving each set of facts.  Once students have a strategy, they can then begin working on fluency.  Students who are learning their facts should be practicing with their flashcards 5 - 10 minutes each day.  Click here for the sequence for learning multiplication facts.

Language Arts

Over the past two weeks, students have been learning the more sophisticated literary terms related to plot structure.  So far we have covered plot, conflict (both internal & external), exposition, and rising action.   The students worked in small groups to identify and sequence the important events in Restart that have contributed to the rising action.

Science

Students brainstormed the traits of scientists. As you can see they came up with a pretty extensive list!

Like good scientists, we've been working on making observations.  After making a list of observations, they sorted their lists into living and non-living things. There was a heated debate if water was a living thing:)

The students also discussed various biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors that can be found in Vermont even if we didn't see them on our walk.  Next week we will be delving into how these two factors interact.
