Report Cards and Curriculum Updates

Need to Know Report Card Info

Report cards are being mailed home on February 4th.  Please note that there will NOT be a social studies grade for semester 1.  Though we cover lots of social studies concepts during our morning meetings when we discuss current events each week, we did not formally assess this area prior to the end of semester 1.  This is an area that will be assessed during semester 2.

Language Arts Note: Grades are based on work that was completed prior to our December break.  When we returned in January we began a new unit and since we were in the middle of it when grades were being completed, that work wasn't included in their semester 1 grades.

Science: Grades are based on the ecosystem unit that we completed in the fall.

Math:  Grades are based on the most recent work completed prior to 1/27.

Curriculum Update

Language Arts

We are nearing the end of our Personal Narrative writing unit.  Students have been learning a variety of strategies to spice up their writing and I'm pleased with their ability to apply the writing skills that I've been teaching to their own pieces.

For a conversation starter, ask them to show you these strategies in their writing!

Show Don't Tell (A Padlet where student brainstormed various ways to show states of being)

Stupendous Synonyms

 Clever Conclusions

Math

We are in the process of wrapping up our unit on operations with fractions.  Next we move into our place value and decimals unit.  This unit begins with modeling, reading and comparing decimals and will end with adding and subtracting with decimals.

Science (Michael Corepod)

To begin our earth systems unit, students worked through stations and identified the four spheres that make up our earth system.

Next, we explored the hydrosphere by completing an activity that modeled the distribution of water on earth.  Ask your student about the distribution and availability of fresh water on our planet.

Currently, we are exploring the geosphere.  We used crayons to model the rock cycle and explore the ways the earth continuously changes.

Social Studies (Anderman Corepod)

We are finishing up our Geography Unit this week.  The feedback from the students about the unit was positive.  I think it was the spy theme that won them over, but it was also very gamified so it kept them engaged:) You can see their unit reflections on Seesaw.  Throughout the unit, they learned basic geography skills that they can use for life.  Below are some pictures from our Escape Room review activity which combined map skills knowledge with good ole' problem-solving, teamwork, and code-breaking.  Super fun!
