Book Projects & More

Here we go into the home stretch of the year! Here is some need-to-know info...

  • We started a new schedule on Monday, April 26.  (There is now a Music Block for Chorus and Band.)
  • SBAC testing is happening the week of May 17th.
Language Arts
The day before the break, students shared their book projects for our read-aloud The Only Road.  We had quite a variety of projects where students demonstrated their understanding of the novel.  Here are some pictures of the projects in progress and subsequent presentations.

and...A rap version of the plot!

Jairo, an adult who works on our team, shared his experience of immigrating to Costa Rica from Nicaragua during the Contra war in the 1980s. He shared his nail-biting journey of escape and it brought so much of what we learned in the novel we read to life.

Math
We are revisiting multi-digit multiplication and division using new and efficient tools and stratgies.  A big component of this unit is using ratio tables.  Students also use their ability to think flexibly about numbers by moving back and forth between decimals and fractions to efficient work with numbers.

Social Studies
Our most recent focus was on reading & identifying latitude and longitude in order to determine an absolute location. One of last week's missions involved finding all the places Agent Mishka traveled to using Google Earth. A favorite tool of students by far!

Science

Students are continuing to explore the earth system.  We are currently studying the geosphere and are learning to make scale models while studying the layers of the earth.

Students did an activity that helped them to better understand how scientists know that the earth is made up of different layers even though humans have only dug a tiny fraction into our earth

Students created the water cycle in a bottle

On Friday before the break, our para educator Hunter led the students in a game of Speed Tic Tac Toe. It was a mash-up of a relay race and the aforementioned game. An active game of strategy that was an instant hit. Great for the end of the day!
