Fall Fun and so much more!

As seems to always be the case, there is a lot happening on the Wizards team and at CBMS.  We continue to appreciate all of our Wizards.  This week we had multiple compliments from adults who do not work directly with Wizards who both noticed and appreciated the thoughtfulness of our students.  Thoughtfulness at CBMS can be making sure our voices are low in the hallways so we don't disturb learning or helping a guest teacher who is figuring out how to use a projector.  We notice each and every day the thoughtfulness and kindness our students show each other on team so it is especially great when they get noticed when we are not around.

Conferences

During November, will be holding traditional parent-teacher conferences.  These conferences are an opportunity for us to communicate how your student is progressing in terms of both academic and social-emotional learning.  It is your choice whether you want your student to attend.  Please be in touch if you have questions or if you didn't get a spot on the sign-up we sent out but would still like a conference.

Vote on election day

We have used the upcoming bond vote and election day to discuss the importance and power of voting.  Unlike many other election days, this coming Tuesday the ballot item directly impacts our Wizard students.  The HUUSD community will be deciding whether to move forward with a bond to pay for much-needed renovations to Harwood High School and to make necessary updates to the school, in addition to merging our middle schools.  We hope you will take 10 minutes to watch this informative video created by the school board.

Fall Field Day

We had a very successful fall field day and even the weather cooperated for us to get outside after lunch to play some games.  Thanks to all of you who were able to contribute to this day.  We very much appreciated the many families who chipped in extra for the pizza and signed up to donate items.

Solar House Unit Final Day

The sun finally came out and despite cooler temperatures, the Wizard architects and solar home designers were successful in building houses that featured passive solar design to heat their houses.  We had a few cookies and some cider leftover from last Friday so we also took the time in between data collection to enjoy a snack together.

Houses were placed in the sun to see how much solar energy they could collect.

Houses were next placed in the shade to see if they could hold onto that solar energy.

Math

Students wrapped up their investigation of sugar content in drinks by creating something that could be used to educate others about the sugar content of drinks.

Science & Social Studies

This past Monday, Wizards either began a social studies unit with Mrs. Michael or a science unit with Ms. Anderman.  In about 6 weeks, the students will switch teachers so that all students will do both units.

Science

In Ms. Anderman's class, we are starting our unit Matter and its Interactions.  This unit dives into the characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases on the particle level and moves into how temperatures impact these particles to create phases changes.  On the first day, students were asked if air could lift something heavy and were challenged to lift a book off a desk with nothing other than a produce bag.  To my surprise, they were able to combine the class bags to lift a student.  We will be doing a variety of activities over the course of this unit that will help us to explain how air can lift a student.

Air can hold up a heavy book, and pumpkin...

and a Wizard!

Social Studies

This week, Mrs. Michael's homeroom began a unit about Early Humans.  The students' initial task was called "Piecing together History."  This activity got at the concept that archaeologists don't always have all the pieces they need, but they put what they do have together like a puzzle, make observations and inferences.  Students also read about what archaeologists do. Here is the link to our "Public Record."   Each day we will add to this document as evidence of our learning and understanding.

Language Arts
We wrapped up our work with the themes presented in Ghost Boys.  The students have had some important and mature conversations around implicit bias, systemic racism, social identities, intersectionality, and privilege.  Our conversations centered around WHY it is so important to be aware of these things.  Please ask them to tell you about what they have learned!

They also wrote news articles summarizing the trial in the book Ghost Boys. Here are a couple of examples...

Flocabulary

Students also started their FAVORITE vocabulary program this week.  Ask them what their Flocab words are and encourage them to use these words in their conversations with you.:)  More about Flocabulary another week...
