Extraordinary Wizards Rock Week 2

We had another successful week on Wizards.  Your students have continued to impress not only us but other adults around the building too! They have received so many compliments that we are sharing them with students in our daily message each day!  Students have been demonstrating their skill sets by:

  • organizing soccer games at recess
  • helping each other and the teachers
  • sharing their ideas in front of the whole class
  • cleaning up after themselves
  • following expectations
  • and so much more!

Also, they are just a fun group!

We had a lot of visitors recently

Our guidance counselors Emily Scharff and Jennie Hempey visited our classrooms to meet the new 5th graders and share about why students might want to visit with a guidance counselor.

Our Dean of Students, Daniel Hunter, introduced our values and school-wide expectations

We continued team-building

We continued our discussion of what makes a great teammate & then students created acrostic poems to illustrate their thinking

We started core classes

In math class, we started our year by drawing a mathematician and brainstorming the characteristics of people who do math.  This will help us move towards our goal of all students believing that they are mathematicians too!  We began with a very open-ended task where students were asked to draw the longest line across a rectangle.  All students tried multiple attempts, made mistakes, and persevered even when it was challenging.  Many students shared their work while their peers learned from their thinking.  I am very impressed with how comfortable this team seems to be with sharing their ideas and their thinking.  This is very important for a successful math classroom so we are off to a great start.

We continued to teach both routines & expectations

Students silent read when they are not in band or chorus

Team spirit is high already

Language Arts
This past week we went for Library Orientation. All students should now have a book that they should be reading at home for 20-30 minutes a night. We also had our first "First Chapter Friday" followed by our very first Book Lottery!  Ask your child what these things mean and see if they remember and can explain them. We also talked about what being an engaged reader looks like.
Ivy won the book "Millionaires for the Month"

LOOK AT THESE ENGAGED READERS!
One might notice all the flexible seating options which help them stay focused too! :)
