Happy New Year!
Team Time
On the first Friday of each month, we adjust our schedule so that we can have team time. Their first challenge of the new year was to create the longest paper chain they could with only one large piece of construction paper. The kids were placed into random groups. It was wonderful to see how far they have come in their group work skills. They were working together very successfully, helping each other, problem-solving, communicating ideas, and compromising. Plus, there were a variety of creative ways they attempted to make chains.
We've been working on the same Language Arts skills I mentioned in our last post. However, we did finish the book. Last week, students worked on their final projects. Engagement was high as they demonstrated their comprehension & writing skills through a variety of project options.
During our literacy focus block days, we've been working on what makes a grammatically correct complete sentence and plural versus possessive nouns. My goal is to make sure they know how to correctly use an apostrophe by the end of 5th grade! 🤣
Research & present information about octopuses
Some students chose the writing option:)
Create a Kahoot about the book. This was a popular option! The kids did a great job, including not only comprehension questions about the book, but also some vocabulary words that we learned.
Apparently, the final projects were a hit! 💜
In Social Studies, we have been continuing our learning on the British colonies. For the last five lessons the focus has been on slavery in the colonies. The timing could not have been better as we are entering Black History Month. Having learned about the transatlantic slave trade, European beliefs and laws, and how Africans survived and resisted slavery helps give students some context into the importance of recognizing Black people and their accomplishments. We have also started following current events. Students have links in their Social Studies Google Classroom that allow them to watch CNN-10 or listen to the Kid Nuz podcast. This is often part of the must do/may do list that I post on work days, but can always be accessed at home. To support this learning at home, ask your child if they have heard any interesting stories from the news lately.
Math
On Monday, we completed Unit 3 by taking the final assessment on multiplying and dividing with fractions. The assessments are scored and entered on Jumprope and students took all of the work from the unit home in their backpacks on Thursday. I asked students to give their work to parents and guardians so I hope you get to take a look at their learning. On Tuesday, we began Unit 4 which focuses on multi-digit multiplication and division.
